EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
